The veterinarian turned pale when he saw the newborn animal. It wasn’t a foal!
Mrs. Johnson quickly noticed a strange change in her companion, Daisy. She was overcome by some excitement and awkwardness, which was unusual for her usually calm demeanor. Although Mrs. Johnson had noticed similar signs before and expected the appearance of horses, it seemed strange, considering that Daisy didn’t have any signs of pregnancy.

When discomfort in Daisy intensified, it became clear that her condition really related to the upcoming birth. The appearance of a little foal plunged everyone into awe. However, the surprise turned out to be not at all what you usually expect. After the last effort, the head and forelimbs of a foal appeared.
Soon after this the full body appeared, and Daisy lovingly cleaned her offspring, looking pleased with her recent ordeal. However, there was absolute silence all around. Everyone looked at the foal with obvious disbelief. Nobody expected such an outcome. Dr. Thompson, the veterinarian whom the family trusted, had a severe facial expression.
Oddly enough, he hasn’t done anything yet and did not inform the Johnson clan. He just methodically collected his things.
“Doctor Thompson,” carefully asked Mrs. Johnson, “do you have enough for this cause?”
In response, he made only a muffled sound.
“What’s happening?” the veterinarian began. “I regret to inform you that this is not a foal.”
Mrs. Johnson was stunned. It was not a foal, she thought. What else could this be? But what really happened about Daisy’s offspring? Why did the vet feel so weird? And how did it happen that Daisy got pregnant? In a quaint village lost in the greenery of the countryside, was a charming farm owned by the Johnson family.
For many generations, the Johnson family supervised their agricultural activities, and their noticeable affection and devotion to their menagerie, especially the beloved mare Daisy, were glorified throughout their community. Daisy, an attractive black horse with a gentle disposition, was loved by everyone in the village.
Daisy never mated for breeding since the Johnsons kept her primarily as a companion animal. Therefore, on a sunny spring morning they unexpectedly discovered that Daisy was acting strangely. She restlessly rushed around the enclosure, neighing and hitting hooves on the floor, which by all indications indicated her concern.
Mrs. Johnson, an experienced horse owner, had already encountered similar signs and suggested that Daisy might give birth, which, given the absence of signs of pregnancy, was extremely unexpected. The Johnsons’ relatives adopted Daisy several years earlier from a colleague who ran a farm a couple of villages away.
Previous Daisy’s guardians could no longer keep the horse, but made sure she was taken care of by her family. As soon as the Johnsons saw Daisy, they immediately realized that they had enough room for her on the farm and they can provide her with a wonderful life. Daisy was different from their other horses.
They knew about her difficult past. Previously, she worked in a circus, and then on a private farm; her career came to an abrupt end due to injury. Daisy’s outgoing behavior made her ideal to perform in public, but the Johnsons wanted to be sure that she will not return to such a stressful environment. Unlike other horses on their farm, Daisy’s daily routine was completely unlimited. They didn’t use her for loading hay or transporting materials, unlike other horses.
Instead, Daisy was allowed to rest and enjoy life, which gave her a significant vacation after many years of work. However, the Johnsons had no idea that someone had disrupted Daisy’s serene future. Soon after, they contacted a local veterinarian, Dr. Thompson, who arrived at the farm at the first opportunity.
He was the Johnsons’ trusted veterinarian for several years and was well aware of Daisy’s condition. Upon arrival, an alarmed Mr. Johnson greeted him and led him to Daisy’s enclosure. As soon as Dr. Thompson approached Daisy’s stall, he quickly assessed her condition. He realized that she was having contractions, and the birth of the foal was approaching.
Mrs. Johnson was extremely puzzled. Nearby Daisy didn’t have a single male horse, so how could she get pregnant? However, she soon realized that this mystery did not cause much concern, because Daisy was almost ready to give birth and needed as much help as possible.
Fortunately, Dr. Thompson brought everything with him, necessary tools and prepared everything in case you need them, but first Daisy had to act on one’s own. According to Dr. Thompson, Daisy was at the very beginning of her labor. So that full labor begins, it could take several hours or even a day, so all they could do for the time is to wait.
But Mrs. Johnson didn’t sit with her hands folded. She needed to find out who is the father of Daisy’s future foal. Perhaps this would give an idea of the foal’s characteristics. After another incident that happened a lot years ago, CCTV cameras were installed on the farm, so Mrs. Johnson decided to check the footage.
She quickly looked through the notes, just at the time when Daisy was suspected of being pregnant. Soon Mrs. Johnson noticed something unusual. As Mrs. Johnson continued her review, her eyes widened in surprise. She was amazed by what was happening before her eyes.
On the evening when Daisy was supposed to become pregnant, she was alone in her pen. Surprisingly, she saw something unexpected in the footage: human presence. The gates were open and a male horse slowly entered them.
Mrs. Johnson immediately realized that this event was planned purposefully, but who performed this action and for what reason? What could they gain from this? She notified her husband and Dr. Thompson, and they gathered around the computer monitor to watch the mysterious recording together.
Suddenly she recognized the horseman. It was Rocky, a horse that belonged to their neighbors. Mrs. Johnson a few weeks ago watched some strange behavior of Rocky, but it never occurred to her that he could be the cause of Daisy’s unexpected condition.
Taking a closer look, she found that some lady had opened the gate and let Rocky into Daisy’s pen, which was a surprise because Rocky’s guardian was a single gentleman. As Mrs. Johnson scrutinized the video recorded by surveillance cameras, she took a series of photographs in which the woman’s face was clearly visible.
She could not recognize the woman in the photographs and could not understand how this woman got into their territory, but she was determined to reveal the truth behind this secret. This confusing situation raised many questions, but Mrs. Johnson had little time to think, as she received an urgent call from Dr. Thompson.
Daisy went into active labor. Mrs. Johnson rushed back into the pen to Daisy and found her lying on the ground in despair.
“There is very little left,” said Dr. Thompson, whose face showed happiness.
Noticing that Daisy’s abdominal muscles often contract and relax, he decided that she has strong rhythmic contractions. However, Daisy didn’t stay on the floor. She got up, walked around her paddock, and again she lay down, clearly agitated. However, it was expected that this will end soon, at least for that they hoped.
Daisy was breathing heavily and Mrs. Johnson felt worried about her precious animal. At the same time, Dr. Thompson assured her that everything is going as usual. Although Mrs. Johnson knew she had to trust her veterinarian, she couldn’t leave without paying attention to Daisy’s unusual behavior.
Sweat was streaming down the horse’s face, and its eyes widened with fear. Despite that Dr. Thompson was a professional in business, Mrs. Johnson was with her horse throughout the examination. That’s why she couldn’t ignore her instinct when she felt something was wrong.
She once again expressed her concerns to Dr. Thompson. However, his opinion remained the same. There Mrs. Johnson realized she needed to intervene. She looked at her husband, who couldn’t help but become alarmed when he sees fear in his wife’s eyes. However, they didn’t know what to do next. Dr. Thompson was constantly next to Daisy.
And then Mr. Johnson came up with an idea. He made several steps back, although he was aware that behind him there is some object, and deliberately tripped. Mrs. Johnson and Dr. Thompson gasped as they heard Mr. Johnson stumble. Despite the cries of pain, it wasn’t that bad hurt. He staged the incident to distract Dr. Thompson’s attention, and he succeeded.
Dr. Thompson quickly ran up to Mr. Johnson and wasted no time helping him up. However, this did not distract the wife from examining her horse friend.
Mr. Johnson, groaning, grabbed his head. “I need to lie down. My head is pounding,” he pretended chagrin. “Dr. Thompson, would you please help me get back to the house?”
Dr. Thompson, standing next to him and supporting him by hand, couldn’t refuse. He tried to serve a sign for Mrs. Johnson to change him, but she silently met his gaze.
“I’ll be there soon, I’ll be back. Keep an eye on Daisy and stay away,” Dr. Thompson ordered as he and Mr. Johnson hobbled away.
However, Mrs. Johnson had no intention of following directions. She believed that her horse needed tender communication. So she walked slowly into the stable to Daisy. Mrs. Johnson moved deliberately slowly so no one gets scared and Daisy was alarmed. However, she was also looking for any information that could reveal the identity of an uninvited guest invading their territory.
It was important to act quickly. She needed to find any evidence before Dr. Thompson returns. Mrs. Johnson began her search, sorting through barrels of hay and examining the floor in looking for things that the offender might have left behind. However, her search yielded nothing. She decided to continue the search, but then realized that something more important requires attention.
As soon as Mrs. Johnson gently placed her hand on Daisy’s back, the horse’s breathing began to stabilize. She assured Daisy gently, stroking her back with a soothing movement. Then Mrs. Johnson examined Daisy’s tail and noted that her foal is about to be born.
But something was wrong. Daisy’s labor continued for quite a long time, but the foal was still not visible. Watching Daisy tense up in labor, Mrs. Johnson realized what the real problem was. The foal was in the wrong position. This complication was serious and could not go away on its own by yourself. They had to help Daisy, otherwise the consequences could be dangerous for the life of both mother and foal.
When Dr. Thompson returned, Mrs. Johnson quickly informed him of her findings. The veterinarian acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and finally relented. He agreed with Mrs. Johnson that it is extremely important to quickly help a newborn horse occupy a more advantageous position.
Every second was priceless. Dr. Thompson immediately asked for additional veterinary care, taking into account the urgent nature of the circumstances. Subsequently, a group of veterinarians arrived at the ranch to provide assistance during difficult childbirth.
Dr. Thompson and his team of animal health experts worked tirelessly, using their extensive knowledge and tools, to make the birth process easier for Daisy. They carefully assessed the posture of the young horse and came to the conclusion that she was exposed in the breech position, which meant she was supposed to show up hind limbs first rather than head first.
This created a difficult situation that required immediate intervention, since it could lead to complications that jeopardize the well-being of both Daisy and the newborn. With utmost precision, Dr. Thompson and his team skillfully bred a foal with a gluteal presentation into the desired position for childbirth.
They used soft but confident movements, making sure the baby’s feet are correctly spaced to limit potential harm to Daisy or the foal. It was a delicate and responsible procedure that required quick decision-making and skillful hands.
While this was happening, Mrs. Johnson watched what was happening from the outside and felt a feeling of helplessness. Heartbroken, she watched as her beloved horse suffers such torment. Of course, she knew about the dangers associated with pregnancy and childbirth, but it was unlike any other birthing process she had ever seen. She harbored negative feelings towards the man responsible for Daisy’s plight.
Having come to the conclusion that there is little she can do to help during childbirth, she decided to show her neighbor the video recording of Daisy’s suffering. Covered in fury, she persistently knocked on his door, and he quickly replied:
“Mrs. Johnson, why such urgency? I was just having dinner.”
“You can wait a minute with the food. What did you do to Daisy?”
Neighbor Philip looked puzzled at Mrs. Johnson. “I don’t understand at all what are you hinting at,” he said, clearly puzzled by her belligerence.
“Well, I’ll explain,” Mrs. Johnson said decisively. She walked through the door and set down her laptop on the table. “Do me a favor and explain it,” she asked, turning on the video clip.
Phillip was stunned. In the frame his stallion was shown, but he had no attitude towards Daisy’s plight. He tried to convince Mrs. Johnson of this, but she paid no attention to it. She was in a rage.
Philip, however, examined the photograph again and this time paid attention to the detail. “Wait,” he suddenly blurted out, “I can identify this hand.”
Instead of answering her, he decided to remain silent.
Mrs. Johnson asked, “Whose hand is this?”
The question of the woman’s identity hung in the air. Philip seemed heartbroken, as if telling the truth was too much for him.
“This is my little girl,” muttered he. “For some inexplicable reason she placed Rocky and Daisy into this pen.”
Mrs. Johnson was burning from the desire to continue the questions, but her attention was attracted by a sharp call. On the other end of the line was Dr. Thompson. The foal was about to appear. She immediately hurried back to the ranch, Philip following on her heels.
Arriving on the scene, Dr. Thompson started asking questions: “What delayed you? Daisy loses a large amount of blood. Foal should be born this very minute.”
Little limbs were already showing, but Daisy was exhausted due to prolonged labor. She missed vital energy to move independently. So Dr. Thompson secured a unique chain on the limbs of a newborn, intending to help Daisy. He carefully examined her stomach. With each breath he carefully pulled, which is why the situation became more and more tense.
Streams of sweat ran down Dr. Thompson’s forehead when he pulled carefully with the next breath. Finally, it seemed that they can do something. Gradually the foal began to be born, despite the fact that Daisy seemed behaved well.
“Give it your all, Daisy!” Dr. Thompson persuaded her to do the last push, preparing for the final effort in which he gave everything he had.
The foal then fell to the ground. All those present breathed a sigh of relief. However, the initial relief quickly changed to anxiety when the foal was left lying down still. Mrs. Johnson’s throat tightened when she saw Daisy trying to push the foal to movement. Countless moments seemed like infinity. Nobody could look away from the motionless foal.
As Mrs. Johnson prepared to leave the heartbreaking scene, she noticed a slight movement. Gradually the movements intensified, and, before they realized it, the foal hesitantly tried to stand up. A delighted Mrs. Johnson hugged Dr. Thompson, but he did not respond to her joy in reciprocity. He looked unusually pale, which made her uneasy.
“Which, apparently, are you worried, doctor?” asked Mrs. Johnson.
“This foal is unusual,” he answered carefully.
Mrs. Johnson furrowed her brow. At the nearest examination she was forced to admit that the foal is not like its parents. “What could be wrong with him?” she asked the veterinarian.
However, her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a car approaching the house. Wondering who could it be, she saw Philip heading towards the front entrance. And then it dawned on her: his daughter was here.
Mrs. Johnson was ready to finally meet Philip’s daughter. She was angry all day because of the situation, especially after Daisy’s difficult birth. She was ready to take out her anger on anyone who dared to stand in her way.
The words which will sound from the lips of Tilly, Philip’s daughter, will undoubtedly shock Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson began to reproach the woman loudly as she approached. “What harm have you done to my Daisy?” she accused in complete disbelief.
Dr. Thompson tried to calm the escalating circumstances, calmly suggesting: “Let’s all remain calm.”
“Ah, who are you?” Mrs. Johnson demanded.
“I am the daughter of Philip. My name is Tilly,” the woman answered.
Mrs. Johnson burst into scandal again. “Tilly, here’s the one who paired Daisy with Rocky.”
Tilly obediently sighed. “Indeed, that’s what I did and I deeply regret it. In my financial despair, knowing the pedigree value of Rocky, I thought I could quickly benefit from this.”
Mrs. Johnson was stunned by the insolence she heard. “How can you take advantage of Daisy on my property?” she asked.
Tilly lowered her gaze to the floor and nervously flexed her fingers. “My father doesn’t know that I did a DNA test on Rocky. We adopted him many years ago, knowing nothing about his breed, and my curiosity got the better of me.”
Having received the results, Tilly was completely stunned. Mrs. Johnson, being an expert on horses, was equally amazed by Tilly’s motives. Mrs. Johnson knew how high a price a rare foal can cost. However, since it was her mare that gave birth to a foal, she rightfully owned it. Tilly must not have thought this through.
Rocky wasn’t just an average horse. He was an extremely rare and expensive breed. Understanding this, along with my own financial difficulties, I cherished the hope of receiving significant profit. And yet I too treasured Rocky. Letting him go was unthinkable. So I forced him to mate with Daisy. Looking back, I realize that this plan was reckless and I realized it when it was too late to do anything.
The thought of stopping a newborn foal was not feasible. I deeply regret my actions. I discovered that I constantly watch Daisy because of my overwhelming feelings of guilt.
Having heard how Tilly talks about her thought process, Mrs. Johnson felt that her stern stance softened a little. Despite that she was irritated by Tilly’s impulsive actions, she seemed genuinely remorseful.
Realizing the economic hardships of farm life, Mrs. Johnson decided not to punish Tilly because she realized my mistake. “I won’t pass this on to law enforcement agencies, Tilly,” she admitted, causing surprise among the crowd, as her anger visibly calmed down in a matter of moments.
Today’s day became a real test for all of us with complex emotions. We could end on a sour note, but fortunately they didn’t do that. In a moment Mrs. Johnson considered all the options and came to the conclusion that she really has what she craves from Tilly to put an end to this terrible test.
Her main concern was the well-being of her horse and a newborn foal, and so she approached the caller with a single request. “I need you to leave my premises and promise not to return again,” she stated confidently.
Accepting the demand, Tilly nodded. She understood Mrs. Johnson’s reasoning, who, despite everything, showed grace. So Tilly without any objection turned on her heel and left the area.
Since Tilly left the ranch forever, and the likelihood of the incident repeating is significantly decreased due to the modernization of the security system, Mrs. Johnson turned her attention to maintaining the new addition to her barn. Right of ownership was not disputed because the foal was the fruit of her steed, but what could she do with a horse of such potential value?
As much as she knew, Mrs. Johnson knew that a horse’s breed can bring her a fortune, but monetary benefits were far from her interests. After the sad events, her thoughts were busy exclusively with the well-being and safety of the animals on her farm, without any additional loads on their existence.
Mrs. Johnson christened the baby Dorothy, a Greek name of origin which means “gift of God.” Rocky was also sometimes allowed to work in the field with them. Mrs. Johnson never put Daisy and Dorothy up for sale, although she had certain hopes for the future for Daisy.
As the years passed, Mrs. Johnson noticed that Daisy is increasingly in need of company. After many years of performing at exhibitions, she realized that Daisy needs more active company. Daisy missed talking to people.
To satisfy this need, Mrs. Johnson organized a petting zoo on her land. People came from far away to meet with her horses and poultry. Daisy, delighted by such attention, lived to see the end of her days, meeting every day the admiration of an endless stream of people.
