Airbnb Murder: She Flew to Florida to Find a Killer

Did this woman pay for a murder for hire for herself? This sensitive true crime case has changed from a missing person’s investigation to a homicide investigation, but the one question that everyone is asking is can you consent to murder? A CNN investigation uncovered a horrific website called Motherless earlier this year.

The same website that these two strangers allegedly met on and began discussing a premeditated murder. Yet the video taken right before her murder and the last messages she sent appear to point to her being held hostage, unable to escape the situation with deep regret. This is the heartbreaking case of Sonia X will be and I truly feel like this needs to be told in a time where these websites are becoming more and more common and harder to get rid of.

So, it was 2025 and 32-year-old Sonya Esmay lived in Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire in the UK. Now, she was actually the youngest of six in her family. She was very close with her sister, especially Sarah. And Sonya was believed to be the softest, most gentle soul.
Nobody could make you feel as seen as she could according to those who loved her. She made others feel completely safe to be themselves. She never judged or criticized anyone and she loved everyone. She was kind, compassionate, and full of quiet love. She brought this calmness and warmth that made everything feel a little bit lighter.
She was a vegan because she couldn’t bear the thought of having animals suffer. Sonya also loved music. She had the voice of an angel. She played the piano and she also taught her nieces and nephews about music as well. Sonya had many friends as well as a devoted partner named Stevie or Steve Hunt that she had been with for 15 years and they had a cat together named Merrill.
But, Sonya would be reported missing from her home on October 12th of 2025. Her boyfriend Steve was unable to locate her nor contact her. Upon investigation, police found that Sonya had actually traveled to the United States without the knowledge of friends or family. She had left on the 10th and she had flown to the Gainesville Regional Airport.
She also had a return flight for 2 days later, but the 13th came and went and Sonia did not board that flight, nor did she return home. Her family began posting on social media that she was actually a vulnerable person with mental health concerns that could have gotten herself in a dangerous situation. They needed help locating her, but that’s really all that they could say and all that they knew.
It was discovered that Sonia had booked this flight to Florida, but she was not known to have any connections in Florida. UK investigators began working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and what UK investigators had uncovered was online activity of Sonia prior to her flight to Florida. So, while searching for why she was there, where she was headed, who she was meeting, an online website became the focus of this investigation.
This website was for people with fetishes to chat, and Sonia had actually been seeking someone to abuse her. She was said to be suicidal and suffering greatly with mental health issues. An internal investigation began after an alert from Interpol was sent to Florida investigators. It was documented that Sonia was involved in a police incident the year prior in the UK in 2024 when she planned to travel to the United States after meeting some online individuals who were willing to kill her violently.
However, this was thwarted and she ended up getting mental health treatment. But, a year later she was asking for the same things from these online friends, and it also involved her being SA’d, abused, tortured, and then murdered. It was believed that no one in Sonia’s real life knew of this plan and they had not been able to help her at this time.
She made it on that flight and she had not returned. British investigators would claim that they found a letter where she talked about anticipating being mutilated and disabled for the rest of her life in the event that she managed to get to this person who was willing to do so. Investigators began to build a case through phone records, CCTV, online activity, and financial records for after she landed in Florida.
She had actually booked an Airbnb in Reddick, about 40 minutes from the airport, and she had checked in October 10th. The owners stated that they had received notification that Sunday, on the 12th, that the guest had checked out. Everything was normal when they went to check, and Sonia was not there. But a few charges had been attempted on her cards.
In fact, seven actually declined, but there was a Tesco bank card that was tried for one payment of $1,200, and this was processed at 1:10 p.m. on October 11th. Investigators found that this was a roadside assistance company called Solver Wolfs. Looking into this as their only lead, they discovered that this company had an owner named Dwayne.
This 53-year-old was called on the 13th and the 14th, and was spoken to. Just thought lounge actually obtained the audio for this call I will play you now.
“Hello, this Dwayne Solver Wolf Roadside. How can I help you?”
“Hey, my name is Calvin Lee. I’m a special agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement out of the Gainesville area. And here we got a weird request. So, we are helping out uh the United Kingdom police with a missing person. Um and looking through her banking records, it looked like she called for a called your business for assistance probably two or three days ago, and the payment was declined. Um her Her would have been Sonia Exelby. Is that ringing a bell?”
“Um yes and no.”
“Okay. Uh basically, she’s she’s reported missing and suicidal. So, we’re trying to track her down. And we know that on uh 3 days ago, she landed at Gainesville Airport and got in a rental car. And was heading south. So, I I like I said, through the banking records, it shows that uh that there was [music] a declined charge from your company. So, we’re assuming that I guess she needed assistance.”
“Yeah, she broke down, needed a tire change.”
“Okay. Um”
“And was requesting to be transported the rest of the way to her location, but the client payment wasn’t going to touch that.”
“Okay. So, she”
“paid for our services.”
“Right. So, she did So, you did change the tire and the payment got declined or that payment went through and”
“We never showed up.”
“Oh, okay. Okay. Did she say where she was wanting to go to, her final destination?”
“Did not say.”
“Okay. Uh”
“She was very uh secretive about everything.”
“Okay. Did she ever provide her name? Does Does that name Son- Sonia or Sonia Exelby? Was that the name she”
“Yeah.”
“about it? Okay.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you remember where she said exactly she was? Like where the the her vehicle was broken down at?”
“Not exactly.”
“Okay.”
“Somewhere out around Reddick. It was out of our service area anyway.”
“Reddick?”
“Yeah.”

By October 17th, 5 days after Sonia was reported missing, a search for vehicle ensued after a search warrant was issued. Dwayne Hall was arrested on the side of the road driving his black Jeep Cherokee. His wife Ginger was in the passenger seat and in footage obtained by Explore With Us, Dwayne was seen on body cam footage asking why this was happening and officers told him that they would take him to to the police department to talk to the people who organized the warrant. His wife Ginger was asked to get out of the car because the car was being seized and she said she didn’t mind getting into the back of the cop car with Dwayne if that’s what they needed. They said that they were actually on the road going to an appointment for Ginger after she had had her double lung transplant.
Dwayne was being patted down when he apologized to his wife for all of this.
“Well, I got a call for you.”
“Oh, okay. Can I get my bag and I need my pills. I have anti-rejection meds in my”
“Do you have anything in your pockets, anything like that? No. Just the phone?”
“Yep, and the earbuds.”
“And the earbuds? Okay.”
In the footage from the camera inside the cop car, Dwayne could not believe that this is happening and wondered why the fugitive task force was there to pick him up.
“Fugitive task force? What the What did I do? What could I have possibly been done?”
And Ginger told police that that weekend of the 10th through the 12th that Dwayne was doing a big job in Gainesville where he stayed overnight to work on a bunch of different cars and he signed an NDA. She said that one of the credit cards that was used to pay him actually declined and she thought maybe it was reported stolen and that’s why police had previously called him and now were arresting him.
“I’m Ginger Stein.”
“Can you kind of just fill me in as far as how you got here, what’s going on, or what have they told you, or anything like that?”
“They haven’t told me anything. We were me and my husband were on my on our way here for my appointment.”
“Okay. Well, what’s your husband’s name?”
“Dwayne Hall.”
“Dwayne Hall. Okay. All right.”
“And they just pulled us over and the only thing I can think of is some uh uh credit card that somebody tried to use that was denied on his work a couple days ago.”
“Oh, okay. So, what what kind of work does your husband do?”
“Roadside assistance.”
“Roadside assistance. Is it like a towing company or something, or he just like”
“small stuff. Every basically everything but”
“What’s been going on the last few days, any idea, or what is any any any difference on what he’s been doing or anything or for all this to be happening? Is this the first time you know of him talking to the police or anything?”
“Yeah. Uh well, no. Not the Not the first time regarding this.”
“Oh, he’s been talked to before?”
“Um he did have He had a big job I think in Gainesville.”
“Mhm.”
“Um they wanted him to stay overnight and work on a whole bunch of different cars.”
“Okay.”
“And I guess they made him sign a non-disclosure agreement cuz they had a bunch of really expensive cars.”
“Really? Okay.”
“And while they were gone while he was gone is when he got the stolen credit card.”
“Okay.”
“Tried to go through and everything.”
“Okay.”
“So while while he was gone and while I was at a doctor’s appointment, cops showed up at my house”
“Mhm.”
“looking for him.”
“Okay.”
“And as soon as he found out about that, he just went ahead and went to the station and talked to them.”
“Has he been acting weird or strange here the last few days since all this happened or”
“Just nervous”
“Mhm.”
“about you guys.”
But Dwayne was officially being detained on charges of fraudulently using credit cards and unlawful use of two-way communication devices. Dwayne started the interview down at the police department by being asked his name, in which he stated that they knew his name and he did not like to play silly games. Dwayne began to tell his story. He stated that the day that Sonia had arrived, he had gotten a call from a British woman in need of roadside assistance, which was his company.
“My name’s Rebecca.”
“I’m Dwayne.”
“You’re Dwayne?”
“Okay.”
“Hi, Mr. Hall.”
“Hello.”
He said that she was willing to pay him in a large sum of money, but when she kept giving him the credit card numbers, it kept declining and so he ended up not going out to assist her at all. He said none of these charges went through and he said in hindsight, she was probably a woman in distress. Dwayne said that he did not know this woman. He did not actually ever meet her and he didn’t know where she was driving to or where she was. And while investigators asked him for his cell phone records to prove that he had gotten a call from a woman that weekend, he kind of refused to show them.
Now, meanwhile, while Dwayne was being spoken to, investigators were searching through Sonia’s social media accounts and they actually found a message on her Discord to one of her friends around October 11th. This was a 176-word message that was very disjointed that said, “I’m sorry, he keeps taking my phone. He doesn’t trust me with it. He made it clear there was no way out unless I shoot him. I was questioning it last night. I can’t kill anyone.” She said, “He’s in the shower, but I’m locked in and there’s no signal in the middle of nowhere. I thought he’d do it quick and not give my mind time to stew and realize that this is the last thing I’ll ever say to anyone if I don’t take his offer of shooting him. He showed me how to use it and where to aim it. I’m so scared, I’m so broken, and in so much pain. All I can do is lay here and doing what he wants to make him respect me enough not to do the things I really hate. I’m sorry, I don’t even know what I’m saying and I’m trying to be quick. My time’s up.” In this message, she did not name the person she was referring to, but she claimed that this man had made her record three disclaimer videos and write a letter to her family because he thought it was funny. But who was this man she was speaking of? Well, investigators were questioning Dwayne Hall and he would eventually change his story or perhaps give a completely different one because he then began to say also that weekend he had a high-profile client named Harold who had asked him to come in and work for him.
He had to sign an NDA and he was there to work on cars. He said he had been taken to a cabin to sleep in that night and then that next morning he was driven to an undisclosed location to work on all of these cars. He said that Harold told him he used a new a company every year that he found through Yelp and then he would sabotage one of his cars with an easy fix to see if the mechanic could do so. Dwayne said that Harold actually unplugged the ground wire in one of his cars. Dwayne immediately fixed it so Harold then trusted him with his vehicles. He said Harold was getting all of his cars ready for different car shows so Dwayne said that he worked on the cars that entire weekend until the evening of Sunday. He finished. He was given a card by Harold to process the payment.
But he said that it began to get very weird because he alleged that calls, texts, and emails referring to Harold that came in that Saturday and Sunday were vanishing from his call logs. And it was like it never happened. He said he was paid $1,200 by card but while he was headed home he said he felt like he was being followed so he pulled off to the side that Sunday evening and a silvery tan colored sedan was tailing him and then began circling the area. He said he eventually pulled away an hour later and the sedan pulled in exactly where he had parked. After a little while Dwayne then admitted that that wasn’t all that Harold had him do. He said Harold also paid him to go and pick up a woman from the airport that she was going to purchase one of Harold’s vehicles and so he was to go and pick her up.
However, he said he was dreading talking about this part because it was a really bad part of the story and he had a bad feeling about it. He described this woman as very prude and a flowery dress.
“He called me up and he said, ‘Hey, I need you to go pick somebody up from Gainesville Airport.’ Okay. I picked somebody up from Gainesville Airport, female. Tried to make small talk with them. They told me basically, and I’m barely even paraphrasing here, ‘Shut up. I don’t talk to the help.’ Okay.”
“This is what this person said? Okay.”
“‘Shut up. I don’t talk to the help.'”
He was then shown a photo of Sonia and he confirmed that that is who he picked up around 6:30 p.m. on October 10th.
“Okay. So, you you describe the person that you picked up at the airport and I have a picture.”
“Yeah, we do.”
“I am hoping that maybe you can tell me if that’s who it was.”
“That is who it was.”
“Okay.”
“So, I don’t need my glasses for that.”
“You don’t even need your glasses.”
“She got out of my vehicle, walked up to him like she knew him, gave him a hug, hopped in in a ’70s Cadillac Eldorado with separate driver, all blacked out, and they left.”
“This was Harold that”
“Harold.”
“Okay.”
“I don’t think that’s a real name, either. I’m really hating all of it right now because I can’t prove the other side of this. Any digital footprint that I had is missing. What am I supposed to do with that? How am I supposed to, you know, how am I supposed to make you guys believe my part of the thing in this? When everything looks like I had something to do with this right now, you know?”
Dwayne said he dropped her off at Harold’s, she got out, got into another vehicle, and he never saw her again. He began to believe that this woman had something to do with his client Harold and he began going into this spiral, these conspiracies about her possibly being lured into some sort of Scientology scheme. He was saying, “What if they do this every year? What if Harold finds some small company and there’s a person that goes missing every year? That’s effed up that you start connecting the dots. What if this is some kind of underground thing? What if she signed up for something?” And he began saying that maybe Harold was framing him. But at this time, Florida investigators had searched this Airbnb that Sonia had booked and it was found to be a cabin at Northwest 122nd Terrace in the middle of the woods. Inside they found receipts from October 10th showing the purchase of rope, gun cleaner, and other strange items at a Gainesville Walmart.
That same day later on, there was also a receipt for the purchase of a shovel. These investigators obtained CCTV from Walmart, and this showed a man purchasing all of the items at the time of the receipts. This was Dwayne Hall. So, keeping this a secret from him at this point, investigators let Dwayne know that while looking at this woman’s social media accounts, they had found him in her messages. That they had been speaking for the past 2 years. Her username was already yours, and his username was Alpha Sadist. They had spoken about bondage, about her desire to have someone kill her, but he said he hadn’t had access to his accounts in months because he had been banned. He thought that one of his comments was too violent, and that’s why he got banned.
But, he did admit that he and this woman had been communicating at one point, and he was sure they had some right nasty discussions.
“So, the reason why I’m having this discussion with you is that our missing person was also involved in those types of fantasies and violent ideations. So, if she came over here with the intention of fulfilling some of those fantasies.”
“If you’re trying to put me in line with something like that, I’m going to tell you right now it’s it’s been all about my wife since she damn near died.”
“Mhm.”
“I have no interest in anything to do with anything like that with another woman.”
“So, you understand that when we find her, and we will find her, that if you helped her, and you’re not telling us the truth about that now, that it’s going to look really bad.”
“Did you find her?”
“What I’m saying it is”
“Did you find her though? I mean, but at the same time, as I said, I don’t really know what”
Alpha Cedis was Dwayne Hall on a website called Motherless that has recently been in the media in March of 2026 due to a CNN investigation into users drugging and abusing their partners and then sharing it on this website. In May of 2026, Dutch prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation and forced the site offline. Unfortunately, the domain just shifted, but in July of 2026 the Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton obtained a court-ordered writ requiring the operator of the site to be locked out for failing to comply with the state’s age verification law.
The owner was Kick Online Entertainment and they could only reclaim it if they posted a 9.14 million dollar bond. He had actually sued this Kick Online 2 years prior because they had not complied. Kick Online describes itself as a moral-free company, but this whole scandal with this Motherless website had started in 2024 with a Reddit post about the site because Hungarian women had begun to see their photos on this website without their consent with the users discussing how they would kill them. Some photos even showed them with their throats slit. These photos were of women just on the street minding their own business and some even had their personal information. A user named Archie147 posted many times. In February of 2025, this man was actually identified as 39-year-old Peter C and was arrested. He was actually a travel blogger on Instagram and he had posted 4,000 images to Motherless.
Peter was arrested for misuse of personal data. There were thousands of these users viewing and posting similar disturbing content. Investigators finally told Dwayne that they knew that this woman had come to see him and that they had been together. When confronted with this, Dwayne admitted to being at the Airbnb with this woman that he had previously said he dropped off and that she wanted it.
Dwayne admitted that this woman had talked to him about suicide and that she had already tried to take her life multiple times prior and she said Florida would be a perfect place to do so. When Dwayne was told that they knew she was no longer alive and that she had asked him to do it, he claimed he didn’t know about any of that and didn’t know what happened to her. When asked why he thought they were talking to him about this, he said, “You want to find a missing person.” And the investigator said, “What’s her name? She has a name.” And that is when he said Sonia. She had never been named prior.
With no more lies to give, Dwayne then named this woman and he then asked for a lawyer. However, when investigators left the room and then they came back in, he was crying asking for an update about his wife. He was also given Burger King and he was left alone in the interrogation room to eat it and he began crying, rocking back and forth, talking about that it was his last meal.

Hours later, while Dwayne was being left alone, he finally said that he wanted to recant his entire statement.
“Well, what would what would you like to talk about?”
“I want to recant basically my entire statement.”
“When we ended the interview, you had mentioned wanting an attorney, so that that presents a conundrum for us. So,”
“I can go as far as I did the last time, but I want to recant everything because I’m many things, but I can’t stand being a liar.”
He began to tell them that Harold didn’t exist. This was all a cover-up story that he had created with Sonia. That he’d been talking to Sonia and other women on this website, and he acted as Sonia’s mentor and wanted to help her. He said that she wanted to take her own life. She wanted to be killed, and he had some violent tendencies that changed when his wife became ill. Eventually, they came up with this pact that he would kill her for $4,000 because he needed about 10,000 to pay back the IRS. Dwayne stated that she wanted it to be done and did not want to deal with humanity anymore.
“And I wanted to make her life better. I didn’t want her to kill herself.”
“When did the planning for that start?”
“About a year ago. Uh we had a couple of failed things because my wife kept taking really bad turns. And eventually, my wife got really really sick. Really really sick. And that’s when we started working out, like like a cover story.”
“So, Harold and all that, that’s all”
“That was all because that’s what she wanted, that’s what we came up with.”
Dwayne then appeared to finally tell the truth. He stated that he picked Sonia up from the airport, took her to an Airbnb which was in a secluded area with poor service.
“We did play a little bit, it’s true. A couple of times, but I only got off once because I was not into it. I couldn’t I couldn’t help but think I was betraying my wife every time I tried. She decided that because of the her her situation, she didn’t want to sit with her.”
Dwayne stuck with the story that Sonia had planned the entire thing, so he made her record a video saying so. But, he said that she locked up and would not give him what he was wanting, so he just deleted this video. He said that they had violent sex that Sonia requested, but at that it was vanilla. He said that he grabbed Sonia’s throat for some light bondage, he didn’t use any ropes, and he didn’t say much about what happened after that. But, he stated that Sonia did not want to be found. She didn’t want to be returned home, and he made a promise that he couldn’t break, so he could not tell them where she was.
“Did she ever do anything during the time that you spent with her where it seemed like maybe she had changed her mind?”
“No. Actually, she got really upset with me. Because I quit. And then she didn’t do what she was supposed to do. Cuz Sonia, she didn’t do what she was supposed to do.”
“What was she supposed to do?”
“She was supposed to bring she wasn’t supposed to she was supposed to bring cash. She wasn’t supposed to bring cards. She was supposed to bring cash.”
But, like he said, Sonia had promised him $4,000, and he said she only came with cards, no cash, saying to just charge it. However, it kept declining. She insisted that there was money on the card and he said it deteriorated the mood, but he still wouldn’t say that he killed her.
“Did you kill Sonia?”
“I can’t tell you that.”
“Do you feel like you would be breaking that promise if you told us where she was?”
“I can’t I can’t confirm or deny that, but I can’t break my promise about anything regarding that. I can’t tell you where she went. And I can’t tell you anything about it.”
“And you can’t tell us because of the promise.”
“Yes.”
When Dwayne was told that he was being charged with credit card fraud, he was very confused asking if more charges were coming. At this point, an inmate who was in jail with Dwayne came forward saying that Dwayne had told him that he had a business of people who did not want to live anymore, like assisted The inmate said that he also had a backup plan in case he was caught and when the inmate asked him how Sonia died, Dwayne said, “Honestly, it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t just one and done.” He told the inmate that he did not think that anything was wrong about what he did because it was the woman’s wishes. So, now with this confession, they went to Dwayne’s home and his family were there. They were very upset that the police had not gotten back to them after they had arrested Dwayne and that’s when the officer said, “Well, this is no longer a missing person’s case. This is a death investigation.” And you could hear all of them saying, “Oh my god.” and just realizing what was actually happening here. So, the search ensued, but nothing was actually found inside this home. But, investigators also had probable cause to search his phone. And that is when a recently deleted 4-minute 16-second video was recovered, and this showed Sonia with bruises all over her body.
“I want you to tell me about why you’re here.”
“Cuz I’m an awful person and I deserve to die.”
“Yeah, but why are you such an awful person?”
“I’ve crushed everyone who ever loved me. I’ve cheated on my partner.”
“God, the amount of lies to everyone about this is um overwhelming. Led on so many men cuz I didn’t know how to just Well, it was more just that I didn’t have the guts to say no cuz um I mean, they probably wouldn’t like me”
